Cherry Writing Desk

Cherry writing desk - Custom Desk

This writing desk is built from American Cherry. The drawer pulls are turned ambrosia maple set into walnut posts, a combination that ended up being one of my favorite details on the piece.

Sizes are approximate and can be customized to fit your space.

This desk started with my daughter Brynn, who needed a place to do homework. That simple brief turned into a chance to think about how the writing desk has evolved, from deep drawers built to hide a file cabinet, to open shelving for a PC tower, and now, in the age of tablets and laptops, something sleeker entirely. Without the constraint of storing bulky equipment, I finally had room to focus purely on form: the curve of the legs, and an accent panel that mirrors that same curve back at you.

From there, I let one design decision lead the next. The wood in the accent panel and the drawer pulls is the same ambrosia maple.  It’s a soft, warm tone that sits comfortably alongside the cherry rather than competing with it. Because the maple read more as a complement than an accent, I needed something to draw the eye down to the drawers. That’s where the walnut posts come in. Set against the cherry drawer fronts, they pop just enough to do the job without overwhelming the piece.

For the pulls themselves, I deviated from a standard straight dowel and turned each one on the lathe to add a subtle bulge at the center. It’s a small thing, but the kind of detail only the person opening the drawer will ever notice.

The drawer fronts came from a single board I dug out of the stack at the lumber yard, specifically for its grain pattern. I kept all the parts in sequence during layout so the grain flows continuously from one drawer to the next. If you know what you’re looking for, you’ll see it.
