Mission Style Sideboard

Mission Style Sideboard - Custom Sieboard and Credenza

This mission-style sideboard is made from white oak and stained to match the client’s dining table. The dining table had a rustic feel, so I selected boards with defects and knots to blend with the style.  All the knots and bark inclusions are filled with epoxy to maintain that feeling of quality yet still and have a well-used and warn look and appeal.

The doors are constructed as a standard raised panel set in a tongue-and-groove frame. Behind the doors are adjustable shelves suspended by a custom rail and ladder system to give more stability and ease of use over standard shelf pins. The drawer construction features dovetailed drawer boxes and under-mount soft-close drawer glides.

Above the drawer and doors are false fronts to add some height to the sideboard without cluttering the front design by adding more drawers, which would most likely be too shallow to hold much.   To add visual interest to this space, I hand-carved some dimples in the wood at the top of each leg.

In the included rendering of the wall, some floating shelves feature a routed groove, creating a ledge on the back edge so the client can stand up decorative plates to keep them on display.    When I designed the shelves, I used a complementary profile to play off the molding profile below the windowsill.

Overall, the mission-style sideboard and the floating shelves matched the style of this 1800s home.
