How to Care For Your Wood Cutting Board

Handmade butcher block cuttingboardCaring for your butcher-block cutting board or any wood-cutting board is fairly simple. All you need to do is follow a few simple rules, and your cutting board will last for years.

  • Keep it oiled. If your cutting board starts to look dry, wipe it down with some oil, such as mineral oil. Just be sure that it is specified as food safe. Not all oils are made equally.
  • Never use olive oil, vegetable oil, or any oil you normally use for cooking, as these types of oils will turn rancid over time.
  • Never leave your cutting board submerged in water for prolonged periods of time, as wood is porous and will soak up water and cause your board to warp, crack, or rot.
  • Keep your cutting board dry. After each use, wash it using a mild antibacterial soap and allow it to air dry before putting it away.
  • Store your cutting board so it is standing on the end. Laying it flat can trap moister between the countertop and the board, causing it to warp or split.
  • Never put anything wood in your dishwasher, including your butcher block cutting board. The heat, water, and steam will warp, crack, and rot your cutting board.

By following, these simple rules, your wood products will last for years.
