Ponderosa Pine

Ponderosa Pine’s Color and Appearance

Ponderosa pine wood typically has a reddish-brown heartwood and a cream-colored or pale yellow sapwood.  It is the primary species here in the Black Forest Area of Colorado.  It is among the softer woods and may dent easily when used in the furniture industry.

Grain and Texture

The grain is generally straight and uniform, and it machines to a smooth surface with distinct growth rings.

Workability and Staining Characteristics

Ponderosa pine works well with both hand and machine tools. Glues and finishes well, but can be a little blotch-prone when stain is applied.
