Hickory

Nine drawer Custom hickory dresser handcrafted by Brian Benham - Custom Furniture

Hickory Color and Appearance

Hickory, native to North America, is a strong and resilient hardwood known for its medium to dark brown heartwood, often with reddish hues and contrasting pale yellow to white sapwood. It is renowned for its exceptional hardness and shock resistance. It is widely used in the furniture industry. It is also an affordable alternative to white oak.

Grain and Texture

Grain is usually straight, though occasionally wavy, with a medium texture. Pores are medium-sized and open.

Workability and Staining Characteristics

Difficult to work with, with tearout being common during machining operations, but responds well to sharp tools. It finishes beautifully and can be stained to highlight its grain. Responds well to steam bending.
