Walnut’s Wood Color and Appearance
Walnut, native to North America and Europe, is a versatile hardwood. Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks, often with purplish or greenish tones. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white, usually seen along the edges of boards.
Grain and Texture
Has a straight-to-wavy grain that sometimes displays attractive figuring. Figured grain patterns such as curl, crotch, and burl are also present.
Workability and Staining Characteristics
Walnut is moderately dense, easy to work with, and responds well to machining, carving, and finishing, resulting in a smooth surface that absorbs stains and oils beautifully.
