For this project, the client wanted a bookshelf that felt clean and modern, but not cold. They had a black steel handrail on their staircase, and they wanted the bookshelf to feel like it belonged in the same space. So we painted the steel black to match, then brought walnut into the mix to soften things up and add a little warmth.
One of the decisions I’m happiest with is dividing the shelves into thirds vertically. There’s something about that proportion that just works; your eye naturally finds it comfortable, and it gives the whole piece a sense of balance without feeling too rigid.
The shelves are staggered rather than running straight across, which was intentional. The client has an art collection they wanted to display, so the shelves are strategically placed at different heights to accommodate the art. This gives each piece of art its own space to breathe.
To finish things off, I added three horizontal bars running between the legs. They give the piece a little architectural character. It’s something to look at, but they don’t cross into ornate territory. They keep it simple. As a bonus, the bars double as built-in bookends, so the books on each shelf have something solid to lean against.
