My client wanted a coat rack exclusively for guests, but a normal coat rack, when not in use, would just be some hooks in their entryway. So we decided to create a wall sculpture that would double as a coat rack when they had guests over.
The shape was inspired by crescent moons, one in the waning stage and the other in the waxing stage. As a grouping, they read as a pair of crescent moons opposing each other. The horizontal bars that hold the hooks are half-lapped through the curves, which gives the whole thing a joinery logic you can follow with your eyes.
The hooks are walnut, shaped so they have just enough to hang your coat on, but don’t stick out further than they need to. There are enough of them to handle a reasonable amount of guests, but they’re spaced so the piece doesn’t feel cluttered when it’s bare.
I made it from walnut because the grain does a lot of the visual work. The curves catch the light differently depending on where you’re standing, and the shadow the piece throws on the wall changes throughout the day.
