Art Deco

Art Deco is a design movement from the 1920s and 1930s that celebrated modernism, glamour, and geometric boldness. It moved away from the organic flowing forms of Art Nouveau toward strong symmetrical shapes such as sunbursts, chevrons, stepped profiles, and angular silhouettes. The overall effect is sophisticated and theatrical, with a sense of deliberate luxury that has made it one of the most recognizable furniture styles ever produced.

Materials were a big part of what defined the look. Exotic veneers like zebrawood, rosewood, and macassar ebony were common, paired with mirror, lacquer, chrome, and gold-toned metals for hardware and accents. Upholstery leaned toward velvet and leather in rich jewel tones. The style has had multiple revival moments and continues to influence contemporary furniture, with elements like brass hardware, mirrored surfaces, and bold geometric forms remaining very popular in interiors today.
