For this project, the client wanted a sculptural piece to display their handmade chess set, something elegant but organic. We decided a root-over-rock style bonsai sculpture was the perfect fit. For the base, I created an ellipse out of wenge, a dark-colored wood that evokes rich, organic, moist earth for our bonsai tree to grow from. I then sourced a sedimentary rock for the tree to grow over, I ground the bottom flat, and epoxied it to the wenge base. For the trunk and branches, I used walnut. A medium brown wood that carves beautifully.
I spent several days carving and scribing the walnut so the trunk and roots fit naturally around the stone, with the goal of making everything look as organic as possible. Once the roots were scribed to the stone, I used floating tenons to attach the walnut branch blanks to the trunk, then carved the entire assembly into a bonsai form substantial enough to support the chess table. For the tabletop, I wanted to let the chess set speak for itself, so I kept things understated and used wenge again to tie the color back to the base. The top features a pull-out shelf on each side, which is handy for wine glasses and captured pieces as you play. A mirror inlaid into the surface adds a subtle touch that helps highlight the chess set itself. The whole piece came together as a beautiful sculpture and a true conversation starter.
