Building a Custom Steel and Walnut Bookshelf

Today’s project was for a Denver, Colorado, customer who needed custom furniture.  She wanted me to build her a custom bookshelf built from steel and walnut. There were a lot of parts to cut, so that’s where I started.

I used my little Harbor Freight metal cutting band saw to do the cutting. Honestly, that thing irritates me. It’s rickety, it doesn’t always cut square, and it’s got all kinds of little quirks. But I’ll tell you what, it just keeps running. It never quits on me. So for all its flaws, I can’t complain too much. It does take a few minutes to get all the way through a piece of steel, but it gets the job done.

Once I had the first round of parts cut, I moved on to drilling some holes. The flat bar pieces are what I use to connect the wood shelves to the steel frame.  They get welded between the legs, and the holes I drilled are just pre-drilled spots for the screws.

While I was drilling, I left the band saw running to knock out the rest of the parts I’d need for the next step. That next step was cleaning off all the mill scale. The quickest way I’ve found to do that is with a stripping wheel on a handheld grinder — it’s basically a specialized tool for stripping paint or scale off steel. It took a while since I had a lot of parts, but I threw on some earbuds, put on some music, got in the zone, and worked through it.


For the welding, I decided to build it up in sections rather than trying to tackle the whole thing at once. My fixture table isn’t enormous, and the finished custom walnut and steel bookshelf definitely is, so breaking it into manageable pieces made things a lot easier.

The first sub-assembly was a decorative element.  Three bars that run between the legs and shelves. I had pitched the client a few different design options, from really simple to more geometric and ornate. She went with the three bars. I liked all the designs for different reasons, so I’m holding onto those ideas for future projects. They’re useful jumping-off points when I’m working with a new client and trying to figure out what direction they want to go.

Once the fixture table was set up for that first section, it was basically rinse and repeat; pop the old parts out, pop the new ones in, weld it up, move on. It’s a pretty efficient way to work, and you get consistent, accurate results.

I’m a better grinder than I am a welder. So after the welding was done, I spent some time with the grinder cleaning everything up and dialing in the look.


With all the sub-assemblies done, it was time to weld up the full sides. This is where things got a little cumbersome. My fixture table is only so big, and the bookshelf is considerably bigger, so there was some overhang. A little awkward to work around. But with good clamps and careful squaring, it came out perfectly square. So if your fixture table isn’t big enough for a piece you’re building, don’t let that stop you. It’s still totally doable, you just have to work around it.

Before I fully committed to the final welds, I tacked everything up first. That let me flip it over, get the bottom pieces in place, and double-check the whole thing for square before going all the way. Once I was happy with it, I welded the whole frame up.

With the metal frame done, it was time to build the shelves. This part was pretty straightforward carpentry, nothing flashy. There were a lot of walnut shelves (I honestly lost count), so I set up an assembly line. Cut to length, joint, glue up, run through the planer, sand, finish, repeat. It’s the kind of work where you just put your head down and get it done.

And that was it. The final piece came out great.  A custom bookshelf with a steel frame and walnut shelves was exactly what the client was after.
