This custom Mission-style blanket chest was designed for a client’s covered patio, serving as both functional storage for outdoor cushions and a refined rustic aesthetic to blend with the client’s outdoor entertaining space. Each aspect of the project had careful consideration of durability, weather resistance, and the client’s aesthetics. The mission-style blanket chest features dual-access, combining a lift-top lid with slow-closing torsion hinges and front-opening doors secured with rust-resistant bronze hinges. This design allows for versatile storage—seat cushions can be easily loaded from the top while smaller items remain accessible through the lower doors under an interior shelf for organization. The piece was built from rustic white oak to resist the weather, and the knot holes were filled with black epoxy for a handcrafted rustic look. To ensure longevity in Colorado’s climate, the joinery was glued together with a marine-grade epoxy for waterproofing, and the end grain of the panels was sealed to prevent moisture from wicking in. Steel battens were installed on the underside of the lid to counteract warping, and the entire piece was finished with a penetrating tung oil, allowing the wood to age gracefully while simplifying maintenance.
