This floating shelf started with a beautiful Mesquite live-edge slab and was accented with hand-inlaid Wenge bow ties. It was all done the old-school woodworking way with a mallet and chisel. My client didn’t want just another standard floating shelf, but that’s the great thing about custom furniture. To add that custom touch, we decided to add a vertical cross member for some visual interest. I joined it to the main shelf with a hand-cut half-lap joint to keep everything clean and strong. The raw slab came with a knot from where a chainsaw had removed a branch. At first, it looked a bit rough, but I saw an opportunity. I carved the knot to follow the natural shape of the live edge, blending it seamlessly into the piece. The grain ended up flowing through it like a river, turning what could’ve been a flaw into one of my favorite details of the whole shelf.
