Stone is a fantastic material in furniture and has been used for thousands of years, though it occupies a pretty specific niche in most makers’ work.
The most common application today is tabletops — dining tables, coffee tables, end tables, and kitchen islands. Marble, granite, quartzite, and soapstone are the most popular choices. Stone tops paired with wood or metal bases is a well-established look that works across a lot of interior styles, from traditional to very contemporary.
Marble is probably the most sought-after for its veining and elegance, but it’s soft and porous compared to other stones, meaning it can stain and etch from acidic things like wine or citrus. Granite is harder and more forgiving. Quartzite has become very popular because it offers marble-like aesthetics with better durability. Soapstone is softer but develops a beautiful patina over time and is naturally non-porous.
Beyond tabletops, stone shows up as shelf material, fireplace surrounds, bench seats, and decorative inlay work. Some high-end pieces use stone veneer, which is real stone sliced very thin and mounted on a backing, making it lighter and easier to work with while keeping the natural look.
