Sedimentary Stone

Sedimentary stone is an interesting category for furniture because it covers a wide range of materials with very different characteristics, though they share some common traits worth understanding.

Sedimentary stones formed from compressed layers of minerals, organic material, and debris over millions of years, which gives many of them that distinctive layered or fossil-rich appearance. Limestone, sandstone, travertine, and slate are the most common sedimentary stones you’d encounter in furniture contexts.

Often used as a slab table top, tiles, or accents.  I have found decorative uses, using it in its raw, unprocessed form, such as my root over rock bonsai chess table.
