Granite is one of the more practical and durable natural stones you can use in furniture, which is a big part of why it’s been so popular for so long.
It’s an igneous rock, meaning it formed from cooled magma, which gives it its hardness and density. It’s highly resistant to scratching, heat, and everyday wear in a way that softer stones like marble simply aren’t.
In furniture, the most common use is tabletops, both dining and coffee tables, as well as kitchen and bar countertops. It’s also used for shelf surfaces, nightstand tops, and occasionally bench seats. The weight and solidity of it give a piece a substantial, high-quality feel.
Visually, granite comes in a huge range of colors and patterns depending on where it was quarried. Blacks, whites, grays, browns, and even blues and greens are all available. The speckled, crystalline pattern is distinctive and not for every interior style, but the right slab in the right space can be stunning.
Compared to marble, it’s much more forgiving in daily use. It resists staining better, doesn’t etch from acids, and generally requires less maintenance. A simple sealing once a year is usually enough to keep it in good shape.
It pairs well with both wood and metal bases and tends to read as solid and timeless rather than trendy.
