Frosted glass is a practical and attractive material in furniture that offers a nice middle ground between the transparency of clear glass and the opacity of solid materials.
The frosting is achieved either by sandblasting, acid etching, or applying a frosted film to clear glass. Sandblasted and acid-etched versions are more durable and permanent, while film is a more affordable option but can peel or scratch over time. For furniture applications, sandblasted or etched is generally the better choice.
In furniture, frosted glass shows up most commonly as cabinet door inserts, where it allows light to pass through and gives a sense of what’s inside without fully exposing the contents. This is a very popular option for display cabinets, bookcases, and kitchen pieces where clients want a softer look than clear glass but more visual interest than a solid door.
It’s also used for tabletops, desk surfaces, and shelf panels. As a tabletop material, it has a soft, diffused quality that works well in contemporary and Scandinavian style interiors. It hides smudges and fingerprints better than clear glass.
Frosted glass can be done in full panels or as partial frosting, where only a portion of the glass is treated to create patterns, borders, or decorative effects. This adds a custom touch that is often appreciated on higher-end pieces.
Privacy screens and room dividers sometimes incorporate frosted glass panels in furniture-scale applications as well.
Thickness and tempering considerations are similar to those of clear glass. For any structural or high-use application, tempered frosted glass is the right call for safety reasons.
It pairs well with light wood tones, white and painted finishes, and brushed metal hardware for a clean contemporary look.
