Bronze

Bronze has a long history in furniture, though it’s used more as an accent material than a structural one. It shows up most often in hardware such as drawer pulls, hinges, corner brackets, and decorative nailheads.  This is where its warm, golden-brown tone adds a traditional or artisan feel. It pairs especially well with dark-stained woods or naturally dark woods like walnut or mahogany.

Beyond hardware, you’ll see bronze used in leg caps and ferrules, inlay work on tabletops, and occasionally as cast decorative elements on high-end or antique-style pieces. Some contemporary designers use sheet bronze or bronze mesh for cabinet door inserts as a modern twist.

One thing worth knowing in regard to furniture is that “bronze” in the hardware world is often a finish applied over zinc or brass rather than solid bronze. True solid bronze hardware is heavier, more expensive, and tends to develop a natural patina over time, which many buyers actually prefer for the lived-in look it gives a piece.

It’s also worth distinguishing bronze from brass, which is a common mix-up. Brass is brighter and more yellow, while bronze leans warmer and darker. Oil-rubbed bronze finishes are particularly popular right now because they read as understated and work well across a lot of interior styles.
