How the conversation went for the above design.
Interior Designer: “Hey Brian, my client gravitates towards this console, but we see it everywhere. They want something original. Can you put your spin on it?”
Me: “Absolutely! Here is what I came up with.”
- I stretched it out a bit to better fill the available wall space.
- I divided it into 5ths and added a back panel on the far left 5th. If they decided they want a table lamp, the ugly cord won’t be dangling in the negative space; it’ll be behind the panel.
- The drawer width lands on the 3rd, so it has a nice proportion to the rest of the console.
- To add visual interest. I wrapped the drawer frame using Wenge, a darker complementary wood. This adds sophistication and subtle changes in color and grain patterns.
- I added a back bevel to the drawer frame, so the drawer front is inset. This creates a nice shadow line around the drawer and gives the whole piece some depth, so it doesn’t look flat like the inspiration picture.
- For the frame of the case, I started the back bevel 1/2″ in from the edge. This creates multiple surfaces to catch the light and shadows, adding depth to the piece.
