This headboard centers on a modern swoosh detail recessed into the face of the piece, painted black against the walnut to create a clean, contemporary contrast. I laid out the walnut grain to follow the direction of the swoosh, so the figure of the wood reinforces the line of the design.
The headboard is sized for a king bed, though it can be resized for a queen. Its width extends beyond the mattress footprint to accommodate integrated nightstands on either side. On the nightstand drawer fronts, I carried the grain direction from the headboard through to the drawer faces, a subtle detail that ties the whole piece together. To keep with the organic feel of the design, I skipped a traditional metal pull and instead carved a small swoosh into each drawer front as a finger pull.
The headboard mounts to the wall with a French cleat, which makes it compatible with a wide range of mattress heights and bed bases. The tops of the nightstands are drilled to pass an electrical cord down into a hidden outlet housed inside the drawer box cavity, giving you a clean way to power a lamp, clock, or phone charger without running cords along the wall. The piece can also be configured with integrated personal reading lights built into the field of the headboard.
