A harmonious relationship between your table and chairs is key. Here’s what to consider:
- Table Height: Most dining tables range from 28 to 30 inches tall (Some as tall as 32″).
- Chair Seat Height: Dining chairs typically sit 17 to 20 inches from the floor, and shoot for 10 to 12 inches between the seat and tabletop for optimal comfort.
- Legroom: Shoot for a 7 to 9-inch space between the top of the seat and the bottom of an apron (6 inches is the minimum)
- Apron Height: Standard aprons are between 3 and 4 inches tall, but we can design a custom table base without an apron, such as a trestle table. This will give you more flexibility in your design, seating, and chair selection.
Pro Tip: Upholstered seats compress when sat on, so account for that when measuring. Measure from the compressed state of the chair to get an accurate and comfortable table height to seat height measurement.

What is the optimal legroom spacing between the chair seat and the table Apron?
The optimal legroom clearance is between 7 and 9 inches, with a minimum of 6 inches.
This is measuring from the top of the chair seat to the bottom edge of the table apron. Anything less than 6″ is going to make your legs feel cramped, or most likely bang your knees on the bottom edge of the apron. Anything more than 9 inches is going to create an uncomfortable seating arrangement where you feel the table is too high for the chair you are sitting in. When pairing a chair with a tabletop, the average person is going to feel most comfortable with a tabletop between 10 and 12 inches above the top of the chair seat.

How tall should a table apron be?
A standard apron is typically 3–4 inches tall. A taller apron reduces legroom, potentially making seating uncomfortable or impractical if the table height and chairs aren’t properly matched. On the other hand, an apron skinnier than this range may compromise stability or strength without added reinforcement.
What is the ideal apron height from the floor for a dining table?
A well-designed table has an apron at least 24–25 inches from the floor to allow comfortable legroom when seated.
Getting the proportions right between your dining table and chairs doesn’t have to be a guessing game. By keeping these measurements in mind — from seat height and legroom clearance to apron dimensions — you can create a dining space that is both comfortable and visually cohesive. Whether you opt for a standard table design or explore a custom apron-free option like a trestle table, the perfect pairing is within reach. Still have questions or need help finding the right fit?
