The headboard for this bed is a picket fence made out of poplar and stained with a gray wash stain to give it a bit of a weathered look. Real Picket fence boards are too rough and would snag the sheets and too thin to sand smooth, so I made my own pickets. The construction of the headboard is mortise and tenon. The only nails used were to attach the pickets to the top rail; the pickets are mortised into the bottom rail.
The Inspiration for the design came from the customer’s beach-themed room. She calls it her lighthouse room.
My original design included a footboard, as shown in the drawing, but the customer opted to have the headboard built. I hope I will be able to build the entire bed the next time around.
